Huff Post reports Canada may be rid of all single-use plastics in less than two years. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the country will ban single-use plastics as early as 2021,following similar announcements from California, Hawaii and New York.During a press conference at Quebec's Gault Nature Reserve, Trudeau said,"As parents, we're at a point where we take our kids to the beach and we have to search out a patch of sand that isn't littered with straws, styrofoam or bottles. That's a problem."The European Union voted in March to ban single-use plastics including cutlery, straws, and stirrers, to take effect in 2021.

Motherhood is valorized in American culture because we don't want to admit the truth:we have built an entire economy on the backs of unpaid and poorly paid women.①Even as gender roles have shifted in the U.S.,the expectation ②that the mother will be the parent primarily responsible for maintaining the household and taking care of the children,③no matter what else she has on her plate,is still as true today as when Bombeck wrote her column.
unpaid and poorly paid
shift [??ft]
expectation [?ekspek?te??n]
n.期望
be responsible for
對……負責
on one's plate
①Even as gender roles have shifted in the U.S.,
②that the mother will be the parent primarily responsible for maintaining the household and taking care of the children,
③no matter what else she has on her plate,
插入語,主句是 the expectation is still as true today as when Bombeck wrote her column.
